Although one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime, there is still no widely adopted standard for effective physical rehabilitation following treatment. Yet addressing the physical, emotional, and psychological effects of breast cancer can play a critical role in recovery and long-term well-being.
This gap in care led me to develop a comprehensive, individualized rehabilitation approach that integrates several complementary therapies, each strengthening the others when used together.
- Pilates: By focusing on restoring range of motion, improving posture, and building functional core strength, Pilates can help address the muscle imbalances and movement limitations that often arise during and after breast cancer treatment.
- Pink Ribbon Program®: As a certified Breast Cancer Exercise Specialist through the Pink Ribbon Program, I am trained in a rigorous, evidence-based approach designed to help clients safely return to daily movement and, when appropriate, more traditional forms of exercise.
- Physical Therapy–Informed Training: My advanced training in Physical Therapy Treatment for the Breast Oncology Patient provides additional clinical insight into post-surgical recovery, scar tissue management, and movement strategies specific to breast cancer care.
- Prospective Surveillance Model: This specialized training emphasizes early identification and prevention of treatment-related side effects. It allows me to observe subtle changes in movement or function and, when appropriate, refer clients to physical therapists, oncologists, reconstructive surgeons, or other medical professionals.
Using these approaches, I create one-on-one programs tailored to each client’s needs from diagnosis, through treatment, and into recovery. Clients may experience benefits such as:
- Improved physical function before and after surgery, supporting better outcomes and shorter recovery times
- Easier recovery following lumpectomy, mastectomy, or reconstructive surgery, particularly in the shoulders, neck, and arms
- Increased mobility for daily activities that might otherwise feel painful or restricted
- Emotional and psychological benefits, including improved body image, confidence, optimism, and overall well-being
Breast cancer clients, whether newly diagnosed or many years into remission, often have complex and highly individualized needs. By blending clinical insight, condition-specific rehabilitation, and proven movement strategies, I offer a supportive, personalized program designed to meet each client where they are.
